In the heart of Podgorica, a city where football means much more than just a sport, the story of one of Montenegro’s most prominent football clubs has been unfolding for almost a century.

Founded on 12 June 1925, football club Budućnost from Podgorica has grown into a symbol of the city, a club with a rich tradition and a breeding ground for numerous football talents who have made their mark on the domestic and international stage.

From its first matches under the name Zora, through decades of competing in Yugoslav football, to its success in an independent Montenegro, Budućnost has built an identity that goes beyond results and trophies won.

The blue-and-white colours have become part of Podgorica’s sporting and social identity, while generations of footballers, coaches, sports professionals and fans have woven their names into the club’s history.

FROM ZORA TO BUDUĆNOST – THE BEGINNING OF A GREAT STORY
The club’s history began on 12 June 1925, when the Workers’ Sports Society Zora was founded in Podgorica. According to historical records, the founding assembly was held at Jola Vukčević’s tavern, in a city that was just beginning to develop an organised sporting life.

The first match in the club’s history was played against city rivals Balšić, with Zora winning 2–1. From its very beginnings, the club became an important part of Podgorica’s sporting and social life.

Three years after its founding, in 1928, the club changed its name to Budućnost. It was called Crna Gora from 1937 to 1941, after which the name Budućnost was reinstated and went on to become recognised throughout the former Yugoslavia and, later, independent Montenegro.

The first major sporting successes came during the 1930s. Budućnost won four consecutive Cetinje Subassociation championship titles, between 1932 and 1934, confirming that a football club with serious competitive ambitions was taking shape in Podgorica.

The final in November 1932 is especially memorable: Budućnost defeated Lovćen 6–3 to win the first championship title in its history. The club soon embarked on its first international trips, including matches against the Albanian clubs Vllaznia and Tirana.

THE PODGORICA CLUB ON THE YUGOSLAV FOOTBALL STAGE
After the Second World War and the revival of sporting life, Budućnost continued to develop, gradually growing into one of Montenegro’s most recognisable football clubs.

The club from Titograd, as Podgorica was then known, became a regular participant in Yugoslav football’s most important competitions over the following decades. Budućnost played against major clubs, developed a distinctive style and built a reputation as a formidable home side.

Two Yugoslav Cup finals hold a special place in the club’s history. The first was played in 1965, when Budućnost lost to Dinamo Zagreb, while the second final followed in 1977 against Hajduk Split.

Although the Podgorica side did not manage to win the trophy, reaching the final stages of the national cup was a major achievement and confirmation of the quality of the generations who wore the blue-and-white shirt.

Throughout the Yugoslav era, Budućnost produced many talented footballers, some of whom later went on to enjoy notable international careers. Podgorica became an environment where players capable of meeting the demands of the highest level of competition could develop.

STADIUM UNDER GORICA – WHERE HISTORY IS MADE
One of FK Budućnost’s most recognisable symbols is undoubtedly the City Stadium in Podgorica, located at the foot of Gorica Hill, not far from the city centre.

The first proper stadium in Podgorica was built in 1947, with a wooden west stand. Unfortunately, a major fire broke out at the stadium in 1954, after which it was rebuilt and underwent several later renovations.

Today, the venue is known as the City Stadium under Gorica and is one of Montenegro’s most important football grounds. It has a capacity of around 12,500 spectators, and this is where generations of Budućnost footballers have secured victories that have shaped the club’s history.

The stadium under Gorica is more than just a venue for matches. It is a place where generations of Podgorica residents have come together, shared great sporting emotions and created memories that have become part of the city’s identity.

VARVARI – THE SUPPORTERS’ GROUP THAT BECAME A SYMBOL OF PODGORICA
When talking about FK Budućnost, it is impossible to overlook its most passionate supporters – the Varvari.
The organised supporters’ group was founded in 1987, although support for the Podgorica club at the stadium under Gorica had existed long before then.

The match between Budućnost and Rijeka, played in April 1987, is considered one of the first significant records of organised support in Podgorica. Over the decades, the Varvari have become a recognised part of Montenegro’s football identity.

Their support, choreographies, away trips and devotion to the blue-and-white colours have marked many important moments in the club’s history.
Although the group went through various periods, including a halt to its organised activities in the early 1990s, its revival in 1994 marked the beginning of a new chapter.

For Budućnost, the Varvari are much more than support from the stands. They are part of the club’s tradition and one of the symbols of the bond between the club, the city and its residents.

LEGENDS WHO MADE THE BLUE AND WHITE FAMOUS
One of FK Budućnost’s greatest assets is the number of footballers who have come through the club during its rich history and gone on to enjoy successful careers.

Some of the best-known names associated with the Podgorica club include Dejan Savićević, Predrag Mijatović, Branko Brnović, Refik Šabanadžović, Željko Petrović, Anto Drobnjak, Niša Saveljić, Ante Miročević, Duško Radinović and Dragan Vujović.

Dejan Savićević holds a special place as one of the greatest footballers Montenegro has ever produced. His career, marked by spells with Red Star Belgrade and AC Milan, as well as winning the most prestigious European trophies, is an example of a football journey that began in the domestic game.

Predrag Mijatović is also one of the names that shaped the history of Montenegrin football. After developing in the domestic game, he went on to enjoy a successful international career, and his goal for Real Madrid in the 1998 Champions League final is especially memorable.

Throughout its history, Budućnost has been an important stepping stone in the development of numerous players, and its football academy continues to play a role in nurturing new generations of talented footballers.

BUDUĆNOST IN INDEPENDENT MONTENEGRO – TROPHIES AND A CONTINUING TRADITION
The restoration of Montenegro’s independence in 2006 brought a new chapter in the history of the Podgorica club.
From the outset, Budućnost was among the leading favourites to win the most important domestic trophies.

It won its first Montenegrin championship title in 2008, followed by further title-winning seasons in 2012, 2017, 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025.

Along with seven national league titles, the club has also won the Montenegrin Cup four times – in 2013, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
This record confirms Budućnost’s status as one of Montenegro’s most successful and decorated football clubs.

The club has also competed in European competitions, where it has had the opportunity to test itself against numerous well-known opponents. European matches have been especially significant, providing valuable experience for the players and further promoting Montenegrin football.

The club’s centenary, celebrated on 12 June 2025, was another opportunity to reflect on its rich tradition, the many generations of footballers and everyone who has contributed to the club’s development.

YOUTH ACADEMY AND A NEW GENERATION OF BLUE-AND-WHITE TALENTS
When talking about the future of a major football club, special attention should be given to working with the youngest generations.
FK Budućnost has a long tradition of developing young footballers, and its youth academy is an important part of the club’s system.

By working with children and young people, the club aims to continue its tradition of developing footballers who will one day wear the first-team shirt, as well as represent Podgorica and Montenegro on various football stages.

Taking part in the AFT system provides an additional opportunity for the youngest age groups to develop, gain competitive experience and meet their peers from other clubs and football communities.

As for AFT results, Budućnost recorded 0 AFT points in the 2024/25 season. In the following season, 2025/26, the club made significant progress, earning a total of 215 AFT points.

In the current 2026/27 season, the Podgorica club has collected 40 AFT points so far, continuing its participation in the AFT competition system.

These results are part of the broader development of youth football at the club and show that there is still plenty of room for the youngest blue-and-white generations to progress, gain new experiences and take on sporting challenges.

A LASTING TRADITION – BUDUĆNOST AS A SYMBOL OF THE CITY
FK Budućnost is much more than a football club. It is a sporting institution that, over the course of a century, has become an inseparable part of the identity of Podgorica and Montenegrin football.

From its first matches under the name Zora, through the great Yugoslav generations, two Yugoslav Cup finals, numerous national team players and internationally recognised footballers, to seven Montenegrin championship titles, Budućnost has built a history worthy of respect.

Yet the greatest value of a club cannot be measured solely by the number of trophies. It is also reflected in the generations of children who dream of one day running onto the pitch at the stadium under Gorica, in the coaches who work every day to help them develop, and in the fans who stand by their blue-and-white colours whatever the results.
